前橋の魅力

前橋のまちづくりは、民間主導の取組として全国的にも注目を集めています。前橋国際芸術祭では、現代アートにとどまらず、詩や演劇、音楽など多様な表現を通じて、前橋の中心市街地そのものを舞台に、作品をたどりながら歩くことで、地域の風土や歴史に触れ、前橋ならではの魅力を感じていただけます。

中心市街地には、パブリックアートやアーティスト・イン・レジデンスによる作品が点在し、まちに人の流れと賑わいを生み出してきました。

群馬県では、県予算の一定割合をアート振興に充てることを明文化した、全国初の「群馬パーセントフォーアート推進条例」に基づき、そうした取組を支援してきました。

本芸術祭を通じて、国内外から訪れる皆さまが、多彩な作品に触れながら、前橋のまちを散策し、そして、人や風景に出会うことで、「めぶくまち・まえばし」の魅力が多くに人たちに伝わることを期待しております。

The Charm of Maebashi Unveiled through Art

Maebashi, a city that has attracted nationwide attention for its private-sector-led urban development efforts, is host to Maebashi Biennale 2026, an event that transforms the city’s downtown area into a stage for diverse expressions—not only of contemporary art, but of poetry, theater, and music as well—works of expression that will greet meandering visitors, introducing them to the local culture and history through which the special character of Maebashi is revealed.

Public art and works created through artist-in-residence programs and scattered throughout the downtown area will give rise to new flows of people and vitality in the city. These are activities that were supported by the Gunma Percent for Art Promotion Ordinance, the first policy of its kind in Japan to explicitly stipulate that a certain percentage of the prefectural budget be allocated to the promotion of the arts.

It is my hope that Maebashi Biennale 2026 will be an occasion for a great many visitors from Japan and abroad to stroll through the city, to encounter diverse artworks, local people and scenery, and by doing so, discover the unique charm of a city that embodies the spirit of “Mebuku”— a place where good things grow.
