Mike Abelson of POSTALCO, a lifestyle brand known for its stationery and bags, starts his creative process with “pure research” that is driven by genuine curiosity, the pursuit of knowledge, and the elucidation of principles. For the Maebashi biennale, he was invited to undertake a research project. He chose konnyaku, a substance he still finds mysterious even after twenty-five years since moving from New York to Tokyo.
Gunma prefecture produces 90% to 97% of Japan’s konnyaku, thanks to its well-drained volcanic-ash soil, a cultivation that dates back to the Muromachi period (1336–1573). After visiting growers and agricultural experiment stations and doing extensive research, he identified karami or “tangles” as the keyword for konnyaku, a plant with extremely unique characteristics ranging from its ecology and composition to its cultivation methods. He expresses this concept through objects made with rope and other materials. Although “tangles” often carries negative connotations, his work uses the plant’s distinctive fiber structure and wild nature to underscore the importance of re-examining everyday things from a new perspective and untangling their functions and structures, especially in a world that grows ever more complex.
This talk is being held to commemorate the publication of *KONNYAKU TANGLES*, a publication designed by Yuri Abelson, from the notes and drawings Mike jotted down in his notebook during his research. Together with the audience, we will flip through the pages and look back on POSTALCO’s journey exploring konnyaku.
