現代美術作家の白川昌生が創作した、幕末から明治にかけての前橋を舞台にした架空の物語「駅家（うまや）の木馬祭り」の作中に登場するお祭を再現したアートプロジェクト。「木馬だ、木馬だ、だ・だ・だ！」の掛け声とともに、カラフルな装いの市民が木馬に子どもを乗せて、弁天通りからアーケード商店街を練り歩く。東日本大震災が起こった2011年から現在まで、白川と有志市民が継続実施しており、困難な時代を乗り切りための「人々のつながり」や「芸術や文化の力」を体現するプロジェクトです。前橋国際芸術祭2026では最終日の12月20日夕刻にクロージングイベントとして行われます。

The Wooden Horse of Umaya is an art project that reenacts a festival from a fictional tale created by contemporary artist Yoshio Shirakawa. Set in Maebashi during the transition from the late Edo period (1603–1867) to the Meiji period (1868–1912), the story centers on the Umaya Wooden Horse Festival. To the energetic chants of “Mokuba da, mokuba da, da-da-da!” (“It’s the wooden horse, it’s the wooden horse!”), brightly dressed local citizens carry children atop wooden horses as they parade down Benten-dori and through the covered shopping arcade. This project has been carried out continuously since 2011, the year of the Great East Japan Earthquake, and sustained through a collaboration between Shirakawa and local volunteers. It embodies the power of art, culture, and human connection to overcome challenging times. At Maebashi Biennale 2026, the parade will take place on the evening of December 20 as the festival’s official closing event.
