生糸の都として隆盛、戦災からの復興、そして官民連携のまちづくりでも国際的に注目される前橋。国内外の建築家たちが話題の建築を次々と生み出す今日、この街は歴史的建築から現代建築まで求心力を備えた建築の聖地になりつつあります。
本展では建築史家で前橋工科大学准教授の臼井敬太郎が行ってきた近現代建築のリサーチをもとに、過去・現在・未来と、前橋市中心市街地で重ねられてきたまちづくりの軌跡について、建築模型をはじめとするプロジェクト資料を開示し、建築家たちがこの街に描いてきたビジョンをたどります。
どなたでも無料で観覧いただける本展は、まちへ繰り出すための立体的なガイドブックでもあります。アーツ前橋を出発点に、〈夢みる都市〉の散策をお楽しみください。

Once a flourishing center of raw silk production, then a city that rebuilt itself after wartime destruction, and now a focus of international attention for its public-private partnership-driven urban development, Maebashi has become a budding mecca for architecture, drawing visitors with its wide range of buildings, from the historical to the contemporary, as architects from Japan and abroad continue to create a succession of notable buildings one after another.
Based on research into modern and contemporary architecture conducted by Keitaro Usui, an architectural historian and associate professor at Maebashi Institute of Technology, this exhibition presents architectural models and other project materials to trace the trajectory of urban development in Maebashi’s city center across the past, present, and future, exploring the architectural visions that have been conceived for the city.
Open to the public free of charge, this exhibition also serves as a three-dimensional guidebook for exploring the city. Starting from Arts Maebashi, we invite you to enjoy a stroll through the “City That Dreams.”

本展の見どころ Highlights of the exhibition

 

 

1. 過去 Past

生糸の集散地として栄えた明治から、近代都市への変貌、空襲とその復興、そして県都としての景観づくりまで。現在の前橋の骨格がかたちづくられた道のりを、地図や写真、模型からたどります。

From its Meiji-era prosperity as a hub of the raw silk trade, through its transformation into a modern city, the devastation of wartime air raids and the reconstruction that followed, to the shaping of its townscape as a prefectural capital: maps, photographs, and models trace the path that gave Maebashi its present form.

2. 現在 Present

アーツ前橋の開館を起点に、国内外の建築家たちが次々と新たな建築を生み出してきた前橋の中心市街地。まちに実装されたプロジェクトの数々を、建築模型やスタディ資料とともに紹介します。

Since the opening of Arts Maebashi, architects from Japan and abroad have created one new building after another in the city center. Architectural models and study materials introduce the projects that have taken shape in the city.

臼井敬太郎／建築史家

1976年岡山県生まれ。前橋工科⼤学工学部環境デザイン領域准教授。建築史研究で得られた知見を生かし、地域再発見の手がかりとして建築の物語を届けるアートプロジェクトを展開。主な展覧会に「光画百年の前橋」（2025年）、「広瀬川川底建築美術館」（2024年）、「朔太郎とめぐるモダン都市前橋」（2023年）、「GUNMA GUSTO ARCHITECTURE GUIDEBOOK」（2021年）など。近代建築の尊厳を再考する建築ライティングプロジェクト（八木健太郎と協働）に「Building Dignity前橋市立図書館」（2025年)、「Building Dignity群馬県立近代美術館」（2024年）、「Building Dignity群馬県民会館」（2023年）など。

Keitaro Usui

Born in Okayama Prefecture in 1976, he is an Associate Professor in the Department of Environmental Design, Faculty of Engineering, at Maebashi Institute of Technology. Drawing on his research in architectural history, he develops art projects that present the stories of architecture as a means of rediscovering local communities. His major exhibitions include “One Hundred Years of Photography in Maebashi” (2025), “Hirosegawa Riverbed Architecture Museum” (2024), “Modern Maebashi with Sakutaro” (2023), and “GUNMA GUSTO ARCHITECTURE GUIDEBOOK” (2021). His Building Dignity architectural writing project, created in collaboration with Kentaro Yagi to reconsider the dignity of modern architecture, includes “Building Dignity: Maebashi City Library” (2025), “Building Dignity: The Museum of Modern Art, Gunma” (2024), and “Building Dignity: Gunma Prefectural Civic Center” (2023).
