A Moment of Art and Drink Found Only at the Maebashi Biennale 2026
The “1st Maebashi Biennale 2026” unfolds a rich array of programs, its gastronomic offerings among them. Suntory, one of the Biennale’s sponsors, joins hands with restaurants and bars rooted in the local community to offer a new way of savoring art and drink together. Here is a glass that distills the charm of Maebashi itself — a taste found nowhere but this Biennale. As you wander from venue to venue, let yourself pause here for a moment.
Official Original Biennale Drinks, Reflecting the Spirit of Maebashi
Born from a collaboration between the Maebashi Biennale and the drink supervisors of Suntory’s Gourmet Development Division, these two drinks take their motifs from Maebashi and Mount Akagi — the very imagery woven into the Biennale’s own logo — capturing the land’s scenery and the passing of its seasons within a single glass. Just as the Maebashi Biennale 2026 itself continues on as a biennale, these drinks aspire to become “soul drinks” cherished by this town for years to come. Paired with a taste of Maebashi’s culinary landscape, they are two confident creations well worth savoring at least once.
“Mebuku. Highball”
A highball inspired by Maebashi’s city concept, “Mebuku.” (meaning “to bud” or “to sprout”) — a refreshing sip carried on notes of honey and mint. It was born from a single remark exchanged during a development meeting: “Maebashi has long been home to many apiaries; bees and honey are simply part of life here.” Built on Suntory’s Jim Beam whiskey, this mojito-style drink layers the gentle sweetness of honey with mint and sparkling clarity, while a quiet bourbon sweetness lingers softly in the aftertaste.
“Akagi Tako-Hai”
A local sour that renders the autumn foliage of Mount Akagi — Maebashi’s symbolic mountain — through the color and flavor of strawberry. Built on a base of “Kodawari Sakaba no Tako-Hai,” it opens with a soft sweetness and a faint, gentle tartness. The strawberry’s richness deepens with every sip, its vivid color as striking to the eye as it is to the palate — a fitting drink to raise in a toast.
Artist Kenichi Obana’s World, Painted Atop a Layer of Beer Foam
A new art-and-drink experience made possible only by the Maebashi Biennale 2026 l: Kamiawa Art. Atop the foam of a glass of Suntory’s The Premium Malt’s unfold five stories, drawn expressly for this occasion by artist Kenichi Obana — rendered with such delicate beauty that one almost hesitates to drink it. Suntory’s own proprietary technique makes “Kamiawa Art” possible: an experience held within a single glass, to be admired with the eyes and savored with the mouth alike.
