“MAEBASHI ART GROUND” is a joint exhibition featuring seven of Japan’s leading galleries based at “Maebashi Galleria,” each introducing an artist of note. For the special opening talk, we are pleased to welcome art dealer Masashi Shiobara, a native of Maebashi, and musician TERU. Known as the lead vocalist of the rock band GLAY, TERU has been actively pursuing artistic endeavors in recent years. This summer, in an effort to give back to his hometown of Hakodate, he produced the traveling art exhibition “HAKODATE ART EXHIBITION 2026 Vol. 3 ‘Old Town.’” TERU is also actively supporting young artists. He reportedly has plans for an art festival, and this event will serve as a cross-talk connecting his feelings for his two distant hometowns—Maebashi and Hakodate—through art.

Rooted in painting, her practice incorporates familiar materials such as fabric and embroidery, extending into installation, video, performance, and other forms of expression. In 2024, she received the Tomoko Yabumae Prize and the Tomio Koyama Prize at ART AWARD TOKYO MARUNOUCHI 2024.
Kaoru Usukubo

In Kaoru Usukubo’s practice, the “path” (komichi) branches away from established meanings and orders to explore relations not yet perceived. Chance and mystery become catalysts that transform artistic intention itself; the painting becomes a site where a vision is both realised and called into question. At the intersection of intention and chance, the visible and the invisible, a “third space” emerges, irreducible to either side of these pairings. As Usukubo writes, “A single point follows a line, arriving in a space that has yet to be named.” Painting, in this sense, exceeds the act of giving form to a predetermined meaning. Viewers, too, as they trace what unfolds in the painting, witness meaning in the process of becoming. To follow this “path” is to enter an experience in which meaning remains open.
Kagami Kigitsu

Kagami Kigitsu/Born in Tokyo in 2000, Kigitsu creates oil paintings driven by an interest in how familiar images can take on new appearances through subtle shifts in viewpoint and arrangement, as well as in the uncertainty of perception. In recent years, Kigitsu has also begun creating three-dimensional glass works, working in a glass studio.By reflecting and transmitting surrounding light and scenery, glass continuously transforms the images it produces according to the viewer’s position and environment, blurring the boundaries between matter and image, body and landscape. Within the continuous flow of time, a moment emerges that hints at events yet to unfold. Through working with different materials in painting and three-dimensional art, Kigitsu explores how the perception of things changes in relation to light, environment, and time.

Anne Kagioka Rigoulet

Anne Kagioka Rigoulet/Born in 1987 in Kanagawa, Japan, Anne Kagioka Rigoulet received a BFA in Oil Painting in 2011 followed by an MFA in Mural Painting in 2013 from the Tokyo University of the Arts. Kagioka went on to enroll in Fresco and Mosaic at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Appliqués et des Métiers d’Art in Paris. Kagioka’s distinctly textured paintings utilize a unique method that combines fabric collage with sgraffito (“to scratch” in Italian), a classic technique used in mural decor where multiple layers of paint are applied, then scraped away to reveal the colors underneath. The artist’s interest lies in capturing the ephemeral moment when a familiar landscape transforms into an abstract vision, she began her signature Reflection series—sculptural paintings based on studies of water reflections from around the world. This later led to her Figure series, which depicts human figures as their reflections are fragmented by wavering water surfaces.
Kagioka’s paintings, composed of striking yet delicate colors, vacillate between abstract and representational, two-dimensional and three-dimensional forms, all the while continuing to fascinate viewers with their keen aesthetic insight and endless evolution.

Alexa Kumiko Hatanaka(b. 1988 Toronto, Canada)is a Japanese-Canadian queer artist whose experience living with bipolar forms the foundation of her practice. Working primarily with paper, she combines printmaking, ink drawing, natural dyeing, and sewing to contemporize traditional paper techniques and materials. These take shape as sculpture, large-scale print installations, and wearable sculptures that respond to questions of climate change, mental health, and survival. Motifs of landscapes, fish, and bodies of water speak to experiences of struggle, resilience, connection, and joy. Hatanaka’s practice includes a decade of community-engaged projects based in the high Arctic, and collaborative performances that integrate and reinterpret kamiko, garments sewn out of washi(Japanese paper). Her individual and collaborative works have been exhibited at the Art Gallery of Ontario, the British Museum, and the Toronto Biennial of Art. Her works are part of the permanent collections at The National Gallery of Canada, Canada; The Shiga Prefecture Museum, Japan; The Material Art and Design Museum, United States.

Shuri Fujikura/Born in 2003 in Imakane, Hokkaido, currently based in Hakodate. Working primarily in painting, she also engages in design and digital illustration as extensions of her artistic practice.Through vivid color and dynamic brushwork, Fujikura captures the feeling of the present, where hope and anxiety, innocence and unease, reality and fantasy coexist and collide.Drawing from music, art, memory, and bodily sensation, she renders feelings before they become words, painting “living”—full of contradictions and struggles, yet still reaching toward the future. At seventeen, Fujikura decided to make painting her way of life and has painted ever since. As her work evolves, she continues toward something not yet known.

Maebashi Galleria opened in May 2023 as a mixed-use complex where art and daily life converge. Envisioned by the Architect Akihisa Hirata as a public square where people gather “under a single tree,” the Galleria comprises galleries, restaurants, and residences arranged around a canopy-like courtyard that allows light and breezes to pass through. The first floor houses some of Japan’s leading galleries, including Taka Ishii Gallery and Tomio Koyama Gallery. The complex follows the Shiroiya Hotel as a flagship project for the development of Maebashi as an art city.
