The 18th issue of “Maebashi Shimbun mebuku,” published on September 1, features the 1st Maebashi Biennale 2026.
This issue offers a broad introduction to the participating artists, as well as places around Maebashi that visitors may wish to explore in connection with the festival, across both its A-side and B-side.
The A-side cover features Ayaka Wada, ambassador for the Maebashi Biennale. The cover photograph was taken by photographer Katsu Naito, who was active for many years in Harlem, New York, and is now based in Maebashi.
Inside, Wada talks about how she first encountered art and about the workshop live performance she will present at the festival together with the Music Club of the Affiliated Junior High School of the Cooperative Faculty of Education at Gunma University.
The issue also features interviews with Takahiro Fujita, who will present a reading live performance themed around the Maebashi air raid, and Nao Yoshigai, who is creating a video work inspired by Maebashi’s “karakkaze,” the dry seasonal wind that blows through the area. Artists based in Maebashi are also introduced.
A MAP highlighting Maebashi’s notable architecture is joined by a selection of downtown spots to enjoy alongside the festival, including apparel shops and bookstores. Together with the artworks, these features offer an opportunity to explore Maebashi on foot and discover the character of the city.
The B-side focuses primarily on artists participating from overseas.
Its cover features designer Mike Abelson, who is creating a work based on “konnyaku,” one of Gunma’s representative local ingredients. The feature follows his creative process, exploring how a familiar regional resource can develop into a new form of expression through an artist’s perspective.
The issue also introduces a food project led by Takefumi Hamada, sometimes referred to as “Japan’s No.1 foodie.” Working together with restaurants in Maebashi, the project takes a fresh look at the area’s food culture and local ingredients, with the aim of creating a new form of “kyodo ryori,” or local cuisine.
From art to architecture, music, food, and Maebashi itself, this issue offers a glimpse into the many ways to experience the 1st Maebashi Biennale 2026.
The 18th issue of “Maebashi Shimbun mebuku” will be published on September 1. In Maebashi, it will be distributed as a newspaper insert and delivered to junior high and high schools across the city. Copies will also be available at various locations around Maebashi, including Shiroiya Hotel, Miyaken Genki 21(Maebashi Plaza Genki 21), TSUTAYA BOOKSTORE on the first floor of Aquel Maebashi, and comm.

The digital edition, featuring all articles, is also available online.

With the biennale opening soon, we invite you to take a look.
